Longtime NCAA leader recognized for using basketball’s biggest stages to create opportunities for students, fans, and communities
INDIANAPOLIS– Indiana Sports Corp announced today JoAn Scott, recently retired NCAA Vice President of Men’s Basketball, as the recipient of the 2026 Jim Morris Pathfinder Award. Scott will be recognized Wednesday, November 4, during Indiana Sports Corp’s State of Sports presented by Indiana University at the JW Marriott in downtown Indianapolis.
The Jim Morris Pathfinder Award recognizes an individual who has used the power of sport to drive change and inspire action in their communities. For nearly four decades, Scott has helped shape some of basketball’s most significant moments while consistently finding ways to extend their impact to the people and communities around them.
Her selection follows a landmark year for college basketball in Indianapolis. Scott led operations for the 2026 NCAA® Men’s Final Four® and historic joint championships, overseeing a week that brought the Men’s Final Four, NCAA Division II and III men’s basketball championships, and the NIT semifinals and championship to Indianapolis. Her leadership extended beyond the competition, using the event as a platform to engage fans, develop future sports industry leaders, and create a lasting impact across the community.
“JoAn has an extraordinary ability to see what a major sporting event can make possible for people,” said Patrick Talty, President of Indiana Sports Corp. “We saw that throughout the 2026 Men’s Final Four. She delivered one of the biggest events in sports at the highest level while opening doors for students and championing service that honored Jim Morris and his vision for Indianapolis. Jim challenged all of us to see every opportunity in its largest possible context, and JoAn has lived that philosophy throughout her career.”
As Indianapolis prepared to welcome the college basketball world, Scott created a new way for Indiana students to experience what goes into delivering an event of that scale. She developed and taught Hosting Mega Sporting Events, an experiential course that engaged more than 150 students across six Indiana universities. Students learned directly from sports industry leaders about event operations, ticketing, media partnerships, fan engagement, and other aspects of delivering the Men’s Final Four before putting that knowledge into practice through meaningful volunteer roles during championship week.
The course reflected Scott’s commitment to providing aspiring sports professionals with access and firsthand experience while creating a model that could help engage students in future Final Four host cities.
Scott brought that same philosophy to the broader Indianapolis community by pushing for the creation of the first Jim Morris Day of Service.
Held March 24 of this year, the anniversary of Indianapolis hosting its first NCAA Men’s Final Four in 1980, the day connected the city’s sports legacy with Morris’ lifelong commitment to civic leadership and service. More than 650 volunteers supported 16 project sites and initiatives across the Circle City, completing projects ranging from neighborhood and park beautification to environmental stewardship and support for local organizations and youth programming.
The initiative was the first service-oriented event held in Morris’ name and reflected a belief shared by Morris and Scott that the impact of a major sporting event should extend throughout the community hosting it.
“I had the privilege of knowing Jim and seeing how deeply he believed in using sports to serve people and strengthen communities,” said Scott. “That belief has always resonated with me. The Men’s Final Four gives us an incredible stage, and with that comes an opportunity to bring people into the experience, whether that is a student discovering a path into the sports industry, a fan creating a lifelong memory, or a community benefiting from the work surrounding the event. To receive an award bearing Jim’s name is incredibly meaningful.”
Scott joined the NCAA in 2013 and oversaw the day-to-day operations of March Madness and the Men’s Final Four. Prior to the NCAA, she spent 17 years at Nike, where her leadership roles included governing body relations and work surrounding the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver and 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Her career in basketball began with USA Basketball, where she served in a series of leadership roles from 1987 to 1996 and was an integral part of the administration that managed the original Dream Team at the 1992 Olympic Games as well as the 1996 Olympic team.
In 2024, Scott received the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hall of Fame’s most prestigious honor outside of enshrinement. A former student-athlete at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, Scott also earned her Master of Business Administration from Butler University in 2005.
The Pathfinder Award was renamed in 2024 in honor of Jim Morris, a founding member of Indiana Sports Corp and one of Indianapolis’ most influential civic leaders. Morris championed the use of sports as a catalyst for economic development, civic pride, community engagement and opportunity, a philosophy that continues to shape Indiana Sports Corp’s work.
Scott will receive the award during State of Sports presented by Indiana University on Wednesday, November 4, at the JW Marriott Indianapolis. The annual event is a community-wide celebration of what sport makes possible, bringing people together to recognize the moments, leaders, and impact that strengthen Indiana through sports.
