The 2026 NCAA® Men’s Final Four® in Indianapolis has been named a finalist for a 2026 SportsTravel Award in the Best Collegiate Sports Event category. The recognition follows nominations from readers of SportsTravel, the sports-events industry’s leading trade publication, and places Indianapolis among this year’s standout hosts and events. The honor has not yet been decided, with public voting now underway.
The finalist recognition reflects a historic weekend for college basketball and another defining chapter in Indianapolis’ record as a host city. Indianapolis welcomed the Men’s Final Four for the ninth time, bringing fans, student-athletes and visitors together for one of the nation’s premier sporting events.
The weekend also established a new milestone: Indianapolis became the first city to host the Division I, Division II, Division III and NIT men’s basketball championships during the same weekend. That unprecedented schedule showcased the city’s ability to stage multiple national championships with precision while creating a connected experience across downtown.
National interest matched the scale of the moment. The championship game averaged 18.3 million viewers, making it the most-watched NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Game in the history of TNT Sports platforms. Beyond the competition, more than 86,000 fans attended Men’s Final Four Fan Fest at the Indiana Convention Center, setting an overall attendance record for the event.
Those results were made possible by a community that understands what it takes to welcome the world. More than 1,900 volunteers representing 39 states contributed over 16,000 hours throughout the event. Their commitment supported the fan experience, event operations and the welcoming atmosphere that has long distinguished Indianapolis on the national sports stage.
The weekend’s impact also reached well beyond venues and event spaces. Community literacy initiatives distributed 3,000 literacy kits and placed 5,990 books in the hands of young readers. Twenty-six top readers received new bicycles, while $75,000 in Literacy Legacy Grants was invested in schools and literacy programs across Indiana.
Together, those outcomes demonstrate why major sporting events matter to Indianapolis. They create memorable experiences for fans and student-athletes while generating opportunities to serve residents, strengthen community programs and leave a lasting local legacy. The SportsTravel Award finalist recognition belongs to the volunteers, fans, organizers, local stakeholders and community members whose collective effort made the weekend possible.
In addition to the 2026 Men’s Final Four, another major event in Indiana received a nomination as the 2025 World ParaVolley Sitting Volleyball World Cup in Fort Wayne was nominated for Best Amateur Sports Event. It marked the first time the event was hosting in the United States, brining 20 of the world’s top men’s and women’s national teams for seven days of international competition.
